So, here is the deal... I’m thinking of getting myself a Peugeot 106 S16 2nd generation here in Japan. I’ve wanted one for a few months now and while the Delta is getting prepped, my wife could use it to practice driving a LHD car. But then I would have to sell it in a few months... The car would probably have around 130.000km and would be around 4000€ landed ( shipping to whatever port included) . I “do my own invoice ” too, so importation costs would be minimum...
I understand that a 4000€ Peugeot 106 S16 in very good condition with low-ish mileage is quite a bit under market value , but my goal would be to simply resell the car after a few months without losing money on it (granted that I don’T break anything... that’s another story :D )
Not looking for a buyer, but just opinions from you guys if you think selling a 106 S16 at this price would be doable... If not I might just send it to myself in France and have it replace my Mini there... Not sure yet.

Awww man ! I always loved these things and prices are starting to take off, if I had 4k burning in my pocket this would be hard to resist !

I wouldn’t sell it until a few months from now ;)
You have time to save haha

Yeah, but I already have a bit of a moneypit of a project car and I have other projects in the works, so impulse buying a car I don’t actually have space for is ... well frankly irresponsible.
Dumb question, were 106's sold new in Japan ? Or has this one been imported by someone at some point ?

Ye s, they were sold new here, in LHD form even! And what is being responsible... pffff who needs “responsability” in his life?? :D

Is there some reason for the LHD? They were building them in RHD for other markets.

Ohhh, nice ! Are there any specific quirks about JDM 106's ? #DougDemuro :D

Japanese loved LHD car back in the 90's... cars were sold new at dealership in LHD forms just because “cool”. The reason I’m buying a LHD one is because I want to export it after and not lose money on it :)
Also I just bought a Lancia Delta Integrale and I’d rather have my wife practice LHD driving on the 106 rather than on the Delta ;)

A LOT but I’m sure I’ll go over that when (IF? auction is tomorrow) I get it...

Not anywhere close to being importable... like 2000 or so, I forgot

Yea:/ I thought so. It’s got those late 90's early 00's lines.

Everything is importable*
* if you want to spend a few million dollars, buy 5 examples, crash test them, come up with modifications to comply with US law, certify to the NHTSA that you’ll make those modifications, and get the EPA exemption

It’s more complicated and expensive than that really... but hey... land of the free amirite!?? :D

Oh, I know the exact process in detail . I just don’t want to rewrite the 600+ page guide to it.

hahaha I bet it’s a freaking pain in the butt :D
As an exporter here in Japan, you have no idea how much I deal with americans asking “hey, how much would that R34 be to Phoenix, AZ”... All the restraint it takes to not get mad at those people.... :)

The worst is the assholes who insist they know what’s involved in federalizing a car or that they know ‘this one weird trick’ to illegally import a car.
SPEAKING. OF. Exactly how hard is it to get your hands on a Mitsubishi FTO COTY? I’m trying to decide between that and holding out a bit longer for a GP Version R.

Oh I know man... I deal with them daily lol... As for an FTO, they aren’t hard to find but I don’t recall US legal ones yet... When did they start production?
![]() 04/11/2019 at 10:19 |

That’s why I’m asking specifically about the FTO COTY. All manual examples become legal in the US in 1 year, 6 days. So if they’re particularly hard to find, I want to get a head start.
The FTO itself, probably about 50-6 0% of MY94 examples are currently fully legal for US import. Obviously gotta check exact production date, but to my knowledge, MY94 production ended in August ‘94.

Actually, I probably should have mentioned that particular bit... all of the ‘95 FTO COTY (and only the COTY) were built between April 1 and April 17 of 1995, making them fully US legal as of 4/17 /2020.
But, uh, they only built 207 of them. And only 20 of them are manuals.

Had I not spent multiple times what that 106 costs on restoring and restomodding my 205 cti, I'd be tempted. They are said to be awesome.
